December looms for the Dallas Cowboys.

. The Boys are in the top spot in the NFC East as the calendar turns toward Christmas and now all they have to do is finish things, starting tonight in Chicago where Dallas faces off with a Bears team minus its leaders on both offense and defense, quarterback Jay Cutler and linebacker Lance Briggs. Watch the action unfold live on TSN, with coverage beginning with Monday Night Countdown at 6:30pm et/3:30pm pt. Heres the problem, though. Dallas is just 13-17 in the month of December since Tony Romo took over as the teams starting quarterback in 2006, and Romo himself is 11-15 as a starter with some high-profile missteps. "Weve always known that what they remember is what you do in December," Cowboys owner and GM Jerry Jones said this week when talking about his teams troubles in December. "We need to change that. That was our goal this year. And weve got a chance to do something about it this year." A 3-1 November has the Cowboys tied with Philadelphia in the NFC East but the Cowboys currently hold the tie breaker thanks to a 17-3 win in Philadelphia back on Oct. 20 and a perfect 4-0 division mark. A Week 17 matchup with the Eagles in Dallas still remains on the schedule, however. The Cowboys have had extra time to prepare for Chicago after coming back to win their annual Thanksgiving Day affair. Romo threw for 225 yards and a score on Turkey Day this year, while DeMarco Murray joined elite company with his career-best three-touchdown performance, as Dallas took down Oakland, 31-24. Murray joined Emmitt Smith as the only Cowboys running backs to accumulate three rushing touchdowns on Thanksgiving Day, totaling 63 yards on 17 carries. Romo completed 23-of-32 passes, including a third-quarter TD pass to Dez Bryant, who racked up 61 yards on seven receptions. Lance Dunbar totaled 82 yards on 12 attempts before leaving the game late with a left knee injury. "We did start slow, but its getting to that point where there is no panic anymore," said Cowboys cornerback Brandon Carr. The Bears werent so lucky in Week 13, losing a tough 23-20 overtime decision to NFC North-rival Minnesota when Blair Walsh hit a 34-yard field goal with 1:43 left in the extra frame. Alshon Jeffery broke his own team record with 249 receiving yards on 12 catches -- two of which went for touchdowns -- for the Bears, who have dropped their past two games and are a full game behind the Detroit Lions for the top spot in the division, a predicament made even worse by the fact that the Lions have already swept the Bears this season. "Weve got to put up a win in the win column," quarterback Josh McCown said. "The standings dont matter if you dont win football games." McCown was 23-for-36 for 355 yards and two touchdowns against the Vikings, while Matt Forte carried the ball 23 times for 120 yards for Chicago. "I was really proud of the effort in all three phases of the game," said Chicago head coach Marc Trestman. "But as hard as we played, we didnt play hard enough to win. We just didnt get it done." Trestman took plenty of heat for a strange decision in overtime, deciding to let the ever-reliable Robbie Gould attempt a potential game-winning 47-yard field goal attempt on second down. Gould missed his chance wide right and the Vikings went the other way for the win. "I didnt do it from an analytics standpoint. I did it from having been around Robbie the entire year and knowing how he kicks the ball," Trestman said of Gould, whose field goal percentage of 85.8 ranks third-highest in NFL history dating back to 1938. Dallas leads its all-time series with the Bears by a slim 11-10 margin but the Bears have won the last two meetings, including a 34-18 win in Dallas back on Oct. 1, 2012 when the defense recorded five interceptions, with two returned for TDs (by Briggs and Charles Tillman, two players who wont be available in this one for Chicago.) The teams havent met in the Second City since a Sept. 23, 2007 affair won by the Cowboys 34-10. WHAT TO WATCH FOR McCowns solid play has masked any desire to push Cutler back too quickly from his latest problem, a balky left ankle. McCown has been rock solid in six games (four starts,) completing 65.2 percent of his passes for 1,462 yards with nine touchdowns against one interception while compiling a 103.6 rating, far better than Cutlers 88.4. All that said though the Bears clearly miss Cutlers ability to extend plays and make something out of nothing, a trait McCown really does not possess. Still McCown has been able to get the football to the Bears dynamic receiving duo of Brandon Marshall and Jeffery, whose 2,099 combined receiving yards are the most of any duo in the NFL entering Week 14. Those two, along with tight end Martellus Bennett, who has 48 catches for 545 yards and five TDs, could be an untenable matchup for a Dallas secondary allowing 294.9 yards a game through the air, second-worst in the NFL. Marshall, though, has been impressed by Carr, Dallas best defensive back. "I dont like playing against Brandon Carr," Marshall said. "He presents a lot of tough challenges throughout a game. Youll notice he changes up his game when he plays against bigger receivers. Hes strong. Hes physical. He plays that way against guys like myself. I absolutely hate the matchup. Its like playing chess out there with him. Every single play is a battle. He just makes you work so hard." The Cowboys defense also figures to get a boost from the return of middle linebacker Sean Lee, perhaps the units best all-around player, who has missed the last two weeks with a strained hamstring. The Bears defense has remained opportunistic with 15 interceptions, but the teams run-stopping ability is virtually non-existent. Chicago is giving up 205.2 rushing yards a contest and nearly six yards a clip on every run over its past six games. That poor play basically coincides with the loss of Briggs to a shoulder injury and veteran middle linebacker DJ Williams to a season-ending pectoral problem. Dallas, though, has an offense heavily tilted toward the pass to begin with and will be without Dunbar, who is expected to miss the rest of the season after being diagnosed with a torn posterior lateral corner in his knee. "Theres a whole lot of football to be played," Trestman said. "Weve got to start on Monday night and do that. That was the message: Lets worry about what we can control and thats being at our best on Monday night against the Cowboys." This game will also mark the first time Bears defensive tackle Jeremiah Ratliff, who was signed Nov. 6, will face his former team. Ratliff, a four-time Pro Bowler in Dallas when he called himself Jay, left North Texas on bad terms. He never played a down for the Cowboys after signing a $40 million extension, with $18 million of that guaranteed, due to a groin injury. "To me its just another game," Ratliff said Thursday after practice. "As they say, theyre moving on, so have I, and thats the end of it." OVERALL ANALYSIS A trend is a trend until it stops being a trend and the Cowboys December struggles arent going away until Dallas makes them go away. This is a perfect opportunity to start that process on the road in a hostile environment with potential weather issues. A Bears team with Cutler, Briggs and Tillman beats the Cowboys in this spot but one without its key playmakers simply cant be allowed. "You hear me say this all the time, but were focused on winning one game," Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said. "We want to play one good ballgame. Thats really what were focused on. Well let everyone else figure out what the history of the world is." Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Cowboys 21, Bears 16

He was headed for his fourth triple-double of the season, but sat down with about three minutes left because of the lopsided score. Kirk Hinrich scored 19 points for Chicago, going 5 for 6 on 3-pointers, Carlos Boozer added 18 points, D.

. Vettel only needs to finish fifth or better Sunday to wrap up the championship with three races remaining, and bettered his own lap record to claim his third straight pole at Buddh International Circuit.ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- Seantrel Henderson listens to his weaknesses from the NFLs pre-draft scouting report on the offensive tackle, and there are no signs of any discomfort or anger. "Underachiever traits," the report reads. "Suspect maturity, dependability and decision-making." The criticisms are nothing new. Henderson was dealing with them well before Buffalo selected him in the seventh round out of the University of Miami. "I dont really think about what anybody really said," Henderson said, referring to the pre-draft assessment. "I know who I am. And I know what I can do. And I know what I can be." Henderson is not hiding from the mistakes that sidetracked what had the makings of a promising career. Four years ago, he drew comparisons to NFL star tackles Jonathan Ogden and Orlando Pace, while being regarded as one of the nations top recruits coming out of high school in St. Paul, Minnesota. Today, hes grateful to have a shot at playing professionally after acknowledging that marijuana use led to him being suspended several times at Miami, and also confirming he tested positive again for marijuana at the NFL combine in February. Henderson insists thats behind him. "I feel like in college, I had a lot of maturing to do, sir," he said during a three-day rookie minicamp that ended on Monday. "But at the same time, I have no regrets. Im happy where Im at. I wouldnt change it for anything, sir. Im happy to be here in Buffalo." Its in Buffalo where Henderson can begin focusing on whats ahead, while appreciating hes run out of second chances. "I know for a fact this is the last chance Ive got, sir," Henderson said. "Ive been through it all in my past four years at the University of Miami. And I know this is the last chance that Ive got to be successful. So I wont let it go." Henderson ends most every answer with "sir," a trait that dates to college. Whats new is the pat answer Henderson has begun to lean on when confronted with questions about how much he has to prove.

. . "Ive got to prove that I can work as hard as any other guy here, be on time at all times and gain trust with the coaches," he said. "Being accountable, reliable and dependable does that." The Bills have been upfront with Henderson. "Weve talked to Seantrel, and he knows that hes got one shot," general manager Doug Whaley said. "Hes been dealing with some demons. Hopefully, those demons are out of his life. And why not give somebody -- this is America -- a second chance." At 6-foot-7 and 331 pounds, Henderson has the frame, skill and nimble footwork of someone capable of exceling at tackle. There were times at Miami where Henderson showed glimpses of his potential. He earned freshman All-American honours. Last year, he was credited with 10 blocks that resulted in touchdowns, and was invited to the Senior Bowl. And yet, there are the off-field concerns, some of which Henderson had little control over. In July 2012, Henderson mourned the loss of his best friend, Jordan Hughes, who was shot and killed in St. Paul. A few days later, he sustained a concussion after being involved in a car accident. In 2011, Henderson had surgery to repair a nagging back problem. Questions, however, have been raised over his passion for football. Bills coach Doug Marrone, a former offensive lineman, is keeping an open mind. "Its early. It really is. And for me, consistency is the thing. I think over a period of time well know," Marrone said. "There is no doubt that he can play. The problem is going to come into can he be consistent enough and disciplined enough and have the structure to be a pro." Henderson has plenty of reasons to be motivated, including his 2-year-old daughter and his mother. "I wake up in the morning, and the first thing I think about is my daughter and my mom, and these are people I feel that I have to provide for," Henderson said. "If I dont, then who else will?"

. -- A former world champion boxer was arrested in Florida on a felony theft and bad check warrant stemming from unpaid IOUs at a Las Vegas Strip casino. The Florida Highway Patrol arrested Antonio Tarver on Saturday night after a traffic stop. Officials say the 45-year-old Tarver was held on $215,425 bail following his arrest on a warrant issued last June in Las Vegas. It was unclear whether he had an attorney. Tarver, who lives in the Tampa Bay area, was named in a criminal complaint filed in Las Vegas alleging that he failed to repay three casino loans totalling $200,000 obtained in July 2012 at the posh Wynn Las Vegas resort. Nevada treats written casino IOUs, known as markers, like fraudulent bad checks. State law lets prosecutors collect a 10 per cent processing and prosecution fee with any settlement. Most cases are resolved before charges are filed. Some are resolved when the amount owed is paid as bail. Jake Merback, the prosecutor handling the case in Las Vegas, said Monday he hadnt heard from Tarver representatives. Merback said authorities in Florida told him Tarver hadnt immediately posted bail to be freed. Tarvers professional career included 30 victories and six losses, and he won a bronze medal as a light heavyweight at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996. Tarver played a heavyweight boxer in the 2006 movie "Rocky Balboa" and has served as a commentator for Showtime Sports Boxing.

. Interestingly, the culprits were not rookies, but well paid, experienced pros. The first gaffe came in the 24th minute of arguably the biggest early season MLS game in history between Seattle and Toronto. Sounder newcomer Marco Pappa, (with over 100 MLS games, and 39 Guatemalan Caps to his name) attempted a back pass to one of his central defenders.

.Murray has played 20 matches in five weeks, winning three titles to climb to fifth in the ATP Race. The two-time Grand Slam champion also seeks to qualify for next months ATP World Tour Finals.Murray said: I always wanted to qualify for it, but also I want to get back into the top 8 players in the world and it makes a huge difference for seedings in the major events.ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- Ndamukong Suh was back with his teammates at practice, and he was almost done talking to reporters when he made an odd reference to the beginning of his career with the Detroit Lions. Suh says he could have played elsewhere when he entered the league. The Lions took him with the second overall pick in the 2010 draft. "Probably a lot of you guys dont know, I could have gone elsewhere when I was drafted. I had that decision in my hands," Suh said. "I chose not to take it, because thats just the way I saw it." Suh was responding to a question about whether he wants to stay with Detroit long term -- his point was that his decision to play for the Lions in the first place was evidence of his commitment. But he did not elaborate much when asked how, exactly, he might have ended up elsewhere four years ago. "Theres many ways to do things," Suh said. "You can drop down in the draft, you can move up in the draft. People can come get you. Theres a lot of things that happen that you guys dont know. ... It is for sure my choice, but like I said, thats water under the bridge, Im here in Detroit. Im happy to be here in Detroit, and Im going to continue to play my heart out, as Ive always done." Suh is entering the last season of his contract, so his future with the Lions is unclear. He skipped the teams voluntary minicamp last month, but hes stayed away from voluntary workouts before in his career. He is taking part in organized team activities now, and was at practice Wednesday. The two-time All-Pro has always gotten himself physically ready to play. "This is the same time I came last year," Suh said. "Ive been in a great program, one thats dialed in exactly to me and whats best for my body, to have longevity, which has been proven. I havent missed many gamees, if any at all.

. So thats what I do. I stayed close to that program." Suh said his absence had nothing to do with contract talks. "If it was about my contract, I wouldnt be here now," he said. Suh says hes not putting a timetable on his contract negotiations. Suh said he was probably one of the first players on the team to meet with members of Detroits new coaching staff. The Lions fired Jim Schwartz and replaced him with Jim Caldwell after last season. And Suh isnt buying the idea that his absence during the off-season affects his ability to be a leader. Suh became a captain last season. "Last year I came in at the same exact time," Suh said. "I showed that I was worthy of wearing a C at that point in time." As for Caldwell, he seemed happy to move on from the constant questions about whether Suh would be participating in the teams off-season work. "He looks good, obviously. Hes in very fine shape, as always," Caldwell said. "Hes one of those guys -- he knows how to take care of his body. Hes certainly done a great job with that, and hes fit and excited about being here." Indeed, Suh looked ready to practice Wednesday, at one point knocking two blockers back almost into the quarterback during a drill. "Hes back and hes in full swing, and doing everything above and beyond," centre Dominic Raiola said. "I dont know if you guys watched practice close, but you can see him doing extra steps, taking extra conditioning measures, finishing down the field 40 yards. We see all that. If I see all that, I know everybody else sees all that." NOTES: Caldwell said WR Golden Tate was absent because he was with the Seattle Seahawks for their presidential visit. Tate played for the Super Bowl-winning Seahawks last season.

. In an interview with The National Post, Stintz said that she is interested in applying for commissioner of the Canadian Football League. "Well, I am a football fan," Stintz told The Post. "I think that would be a great job. That is definitely a job that I would want to do. It is open now." Current CFL commissioner Mark Cohon announced this week that hed be stepping down from the position next spring. Cohon has held the position since 2007. Stintz, 44, has been a Toronto councillor since 2003 and withdrew as a candidate for the mayoral election after a lack of support and funds. "This has impacted my financial ability to continue. Absent a more substantial level of support I must conclude my efforts," she said during a news conference.

. The Maple Leafs will play on the road for the first time this season after dropping home contests to Montreal and Pittsburgh to begin the campaign. After losing a one-goal decision to the Canadiens on Wednesday, they were bested 5-2 on Saturday by the Penguins.MIAMI - The last time Dwyane Wade played in an NBA Finals game, he needed fluid drained from his left knee and eight hours of intense game-day therapy just to get into uniform. The Miami Heat guard later described it in a single word. "Hell," Wade said. It was also worth it, after he scored 23 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and hoisted his third Larry OBrien Trophy. Now, unlike last year, Wade is not dealing with any injuries heading into the Miamis finals rematch against the San Antonio Spurs. At 32 years old and with 866 NBA games already on his playing odometer, Wade still deals with plenty of aches and pains, good days and bad days, and basically has a standing appointment in the Heat training room. But compared to last seasons NBA Finals, his knees are good as new. "Hes a big-time, huge piece to our puzzle," four-time NBA MVP and Heat star LeBron James said. "To have him out there in the groove that hes in right now, its going to help us." The Heat are looking to win their third straight title and Wade is on the cusp of joining a list of all-time NBA greats. There are just seven players with four championships and at least one NBA Finals MVP award on their resumes: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, John Havlicek, Magic Johnson, Shaquille ONeal, Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan and the Spurs Tim Duncan. Wade could be the eighth person in that club. "We just want to continue to add to what were accomplishing," Wade said. Almost forgotten amid all the memories of Wade limping about during last years playoffs — he whacked what was his "good" knee at this time last year, the surgically repaired left one, in a collision with the Spurs Manu Ginobili during Game 6 of the finals — is he had big games when Miami needed him. Through his first 14 games of the 2013 playoffs, Wade was averaging 13.6 points. In the final eight games of that post-season run, starting with Game 7 against Indiana, he averaged 19.8 points. And in the last four games of the finals, he averaged 23.5 points against the Spurs to close the series. As his knees got worse, Wade seemed to gget better.

. "He still found a way last year," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "He really did. He had some of his biggest games not only in the finals, but Game 7, we didnt think necessarily he was going to even play that game in the Eastern Conference finals." This year, the Heat tried to leave nothing to chance with Wades health. The so-called maintenance plan for Wade — limiting his minutes to save his knees — kicked in on the second night of the regular season. He wound up missing 28 games in all, mostly because of that rest-and-rehab scheme, to ensure that he would be good to go in the playoffs. The results cant be argued. Wade is averaging 18.7 points on 52 per cent shooting, Miami is 12-3 in the playoffs and when getting more than three days rest — like the Heat will have before Game 1 in San Antonio on Thursday night — the perennial All-Star has had games of 23, 14, 27 and 23 points on a combined 60 per cent shooting. "Dwyane is playing great," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said Tuesday. "He looks a lot more spry and ready to go then he did last year in the finals." Maybe the biggest payoff of the regular-season maintenance plan has been how Wade has closed games in this post-season. Wade is shooting 56 per cent in fourth quarters during the playoffs, the best clip of his career and the best percentage of any guard with more than 30 shots in the final period of post-season games this season. San Antonios Danny Green is second on that list, shooting just under 49 per cent. Wade doesnt like talking about his place in history. But he knows what rarefied air he would be entering with a fourth title run. "I think weve all put ourselves in great situations, and were just going to continue to try to enjoy this moment that were in because its an amazing moment," Wade said. "Its something that, for a lifetime, is going to fulfil us as athletes. Even when we cant play this game, were going to always be able to talk about this." And now, when talking about his health, Wade has another one-word answer: "Better."

SAN FRANCISCO -- Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig said Thursday that the league and players union have previously discussed the idea of a blanket policy regarding domestic violence during collective bargaining, yet so far baseball has opted to handle any issue on a case-by-case basis.

. "Yes, it has been discussed, because were sensitive to all issues. But Im not going to sit here and (hypothesize)," Selig said Thursday. "Fortunately we dont have that issue in front of us. But we deal with all issues." Selig, speaking at AT&T Park as part of his farewell tour before the Giants hosted Arizona, declined to address the NFLs situation surrounding the Ray Rice case and whether he thought there could be an impartial investigation. Selig said he cant remember the last domestic violence case involving a baseball player. Talks about a policy could come up again in the next collective bargaining, but Selig leaves office Jan. 25 and Rob Manfred takes over as commissioner. "We havent had any cases Im happy to say for a long, long time. I cant remember when the last time was," Selig said. "Im grateful for that. But we deal with situations as they occur. The only thing I want to say, Ive said it before and Ill say it again, we are a social institution and Im proud of our record in dealing with a myriad of subjects, and we deal with them, I think, quite effectively."

The Toronto Argonauts running back hurt his left ankle during the teams practice Friday afternoon at Rogers Centre.CHICAGO -- Hector Noesi made the request and eventually got the result he wanted from Moises Sierra. That was a win for the Chicago White Sox. Noesis search for a victory continues. Sierra drove in the winning run with a single in the ninth inning, and the White Sox beat the Cleveland Indians 3-2 Wednesday night to complete a three-game sweep. "I think it was in the sixth inning I told him, Youve got to do something for me," Noesi said. "He did it in the last inning." Noesi and Clevelands T.J. House each delivered dominant starts. The Indians Jason Giambi hit his 440th homer, but the White Sox came away with their seventh win in 10 games. Cleveland had just scored a run in the top of the ninth off Ronald Belisario (3-3) when the White Sox answered in the bottom half against Bryan Shaw (1-1). Third baseman Mike Aviles bounced the throw to first on Tyler Flowers leadoff grounder. Pinch-runner Leury Garcia stole second and moved up on a fly by Marcus Semien before Sierra lined a 3-2 pitch to right for the winning single, teammates mobbing him around first base. "Ive done that in the minor leagues before," Sierra said. "But never in the major leagues and Im very happy and very thankful for that." It all happened after a botched throw on a routine play. "Routine ground ball, play thats gotta be made, and I didnt make it," Aviles said. The White Sox took a 2-1 lead in the eighth when Adam Dunn drove in Gordon Beckham with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly against Cody Allen, but Belisario couldnt hold it in the ninth. Michael Brantley drove a leadoff single off the pitchers right hip, and the problems just mounted from there. The Indians caught a break when Adam Dunn overthrew second after fielding Jason Kipnis grounder to first. With two out, Belisario intentionally walked Giambi before Brantley scored on Yan Gomes single, barely sliding in ahead of a strike from Sierra in right to tie it at 2-all. The blown save was the third in six chances for Belisario. The Indians took a 1-0 lead on Giambis solo homer off Noesi in the second. But Chicago tied it in the seventh when Dunn singled leading off aggainst House and scored on a two-out base hit by Semien against Scott Atchison.

. Noesi, meanwhile, dominated over 7 1-3 innings but still is seeking his first win in more than two years. "Hes really transitioned well from going as the long guy in the bullpen to being a starter," manager Robin Ventura said. "I think hes gotten a better feel for some different pitches just because now hes going through the lineup a couple times and hes able to get a feel for it instead of being in there for an inning or an inning and a half." He gave up one run and five hits while striking out five without a walk. But the winless streak continued. The right-hander is 0-4 in six starts and 12 appearances this season with Seattle, Texas and Chicago and 0-14 in his last 40 games. His most recent win? That was when he beat Minnesota while with Seattle on May 6, 2012. House gave up one run and five hits in 6 1-3 innings and struck out eight while walking one. He left with a 1-0 lead after giving up back-to-back singles to Dunn and Alexei Ramirez, who was thrown out trying to stretch it to a double. "On a night that were going home pretty frustrated that was about an encouraging a start as youll see," manager Terry Francona said. "He was really good." NOTES: The White Sox have not decided if slugger Jose Abreu (left ankle tendinitis) will need rehab at-bats, although he is on course to return from the disabled list when hes eligible. "As of right now, there is not a plan for him to go out," Ventura said. He doesnt expect Abreu to be limited when he returns. ... Francona said RHP Zach McAllister (lower back strain) will throw Friday on the field at Progressive Field, possibly in a simulated-game setting. McAllister was placed on the 15-day disabled list last Thursday and threw a 50-pitch bullpen session Monday. . Francona said INF Nick Swisher (left knee) was examined and "structurally, hes pretty good" and had injections in both knees. "I think that the initial view is that it wont be an extended DL," Francona said. ... With Kipnis activated from the 15-day disabled list, INF Justin Sellers was optioned to Triple-A Columbus.

. -- Josh Beckett said he will be ready for the start of the Dodgers season after having a rib removed last July in a surgery to alleviate a nerve condition that was affecting his right arm "I dont have numbness and tingling, anymore," Beckett said Monday. No doubts, either. The right-hander is expected to battle newly acquired Paul Maholm for the fifth spot in the Dodgers starting rotation this spring. Beckett, the fifth starter before last years mid-season surgery, breezed through his first bullpen session Monday in Arizona. He threw 30 pitches with no sign of trouble. "Im not tentative," said Beckett, who reported to camp a day late so he could attend a wedding. "Im going to throw as hard as I can and see what happens. Right now, I feel great. Ill throw the ball until I blow out and Im hoping thats not for a few more years." The Dodgers signing of Maholm on Saturday is considered a hedge against the possibility of further injury to Beckett, a three-time All-Star whom the Dodgers acquired from Boston along with Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford and Nick Punto in a 2012 trade. "Josh is doing really well, but hes coming off tough surgery and theres not a lot of history with that surgery, so well see where things go," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. Beckett underwent the same surgical procedure that former St. Louis Cardinals ace Chris Carpenter underwent in July 2012. Carpenter went on to pitch in six more games in 2012 -- three in the regular season and three in the playoffs. But Carpenter did not pitch in 2013. He announced his retirement in November. Beckett said he has spoken to Carpenter. He said he was told Carpenters nerve condition was more severe than his own. Beckett also said the surgery was more complicated. Dr. Greg Pearl of Dallas performed both procedures. Carpenters experience and advice helped, he said. "It got me through the mental part," said Beckett, who was 0-5 with a 5.19 ERA when he landed on the disabled list on May 14. Neck problems and numbness in his right hand had troubled Beckett for the last few years. It got to the point where he learned how to drive with only his left hand. There were times, he said, when he couldnt feel the steering wheel with his right. "Its crazy how simple things become difficult to do," he said. The surgery, which also includes removal of some connective tissue, alleviated pressure on a nerve in his neck, he said. He never felt any pain. But there were moments when he had no control of his pitches. "I didnt know if I was going to throw it over the backstop," he said. "I had no idea where it was going to go." Beckett arrived in camp with his confidence bolstered by three workouts during the last couple of weeks in Texas. He threw off a mound twice, on Jan. 31 and again on Feb 3. Cold weather forced him inside on Feb. 6 where he threw 38 pitches off a flat surface. Beckett has no illusions about the competition he faces in camp. "Its just if hes healthy," Mattingly said. "Josh throws the ball good. Hes been a quality pitcher for a long time and he still has good stuff. How he bounces back, well see. Weve had nothing but positive reports all winter. Josh has never been in the bullpen. Obviously, its a competitive situation. Were not handing anything out for anybody. If hes healthy, well see." Beckett expects to have more time to prepare than the Dodgers calendar might indicate. They break camp in Arizona after a March 16 game and travel to Australia for a pair of regular-season games in Sydney against the Arizona Diamondbacks on March 22 and 23. "Im probably not going to start opening day in Australia," Beckett said. "Theyre paying a guy a lot of money to do that. Not all of us are getting ready for those days. Some of us have a little more time than it appears we do." NOTES: Outfielder Yasiel Puig is already in camp. Mattingly might open the season with the versatile Puig at the top of the Dodgers batting order. .The rest of the team is scheduled to report on Thursday.

. With Bernard hurt, the second-round pick has emerged.Hill ran for 152 yards during a 27-10 win at New Orleans on Sunday, his second big game. He also ran for 154 yards against Jacksonville earlier this season.ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- For someone who was lightly recruited coming out of high school, linebacker Khalil Mack is attracting an impressive crowd leading up to the NFL draft. Representatives from all 32 teams were on hand Tuesday for the University at Buffalos pro day, and the projected first-round draft pick was the main attraction inside the Buffalo Bills Fieldhouse. "Thirty-two teams? Thats a blessing," Mack said. "I dont try to notice that. I try to keep that on the backburner. Im still working hard, and thats what its about with me. I dont focus on the attention." Mack is becoming difficult to overlook. At 6-foot-3 and 251 pounds, he possesses the size, speed and versatility to play a variety of positions in any type of defensive scheme. He also has impressive numbers over a four-year college career in the Mid-American Conference, which he capped by earning the Jack Lambert award as the nations top linebacker. He set an FBS career record with 16 forced fumbles and tied another one with 75 career tackles for a loss. Not bad for someone who, coming out of Fort Pierce, Fla., first considered attending Liberty University, before being offered a full scholarship by Buffalo, and only after Liberty assistant Robert Wimberly was hired by the Bulls. Some five years later, Mack had the NFLs attention during a Bulls pro day that traditionally attracts between 15 and 20 scouts. "That just shows you what high regard the NFL has of him," Bills general manager Doug Whaley said of the turnout. "The skys the limit on him." Among those on hand were Oakland Raiders GM Reggie McKenzie and Cleveland Browns rookie coach Mike Pettine, the Bills former defensive co-ordinator. Pettine joked he just happened to be in town to pick up a few things he left behind. As for his interest in Mack, Pettine broke into a wide smile and said: "Just a little bit." Pettine then spent about 10 minutes on the sideline discussiing Mack with Bulls coach Jeff Quinn.

. "Absolutely the best player Ive seen. Hes just so complete," Quinn said of Mack. "Hes a game-changer." That was evident in a last years season-opening 40-20 loss at Ohio State. Mack was in on nine tackles and had 2 1/2 sacks. He returned an interception 45 yards for a touchdown that put a scare into the Buckeyes by cutting their lead to 20-13 early in the second quarter. "That was his coming-out party. The game wasnt too big for him," Whaley said. "He showed that he belonged out there. And those are the type of guys hell be playing against on Sundays." His production didnt tail off, either. Mack finished the season with a MAC-best 10 1/2 sacks and 19 tackles for a loss. He also had five forced fumbles and three interceptions while leading Buffalo (8-5) to only its second bowl berth, a 49-24 loss to San Diego State in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. An NFL scouting report rates Mack as a top-10 draft prospect and lists "disruptive first-step quickness" among his strengths. On Tuesday, Mack limited his workouts to individual drills and one 40-yard dash, in which he was clocked at 4.54 seconds. That was an improvement over the 4.63-second time he had at the NFL combine in Indianapolis last month. "It didnt feel like me. I felt tight," Mack said, referring to his time at Indianapolis. "I finished it up the way I wanted to today." Mack has been highly motivated to succeed since he first arrived in Buffalo. He wore No. 46 after discovering that was the number of his power ranking out of 100 on an NCAA football video game. Though he might consider changing numbers after being drafted, Mack doesnt intend to alter his approach. "I feel like theres a lot more that I have to prove, especially coming out of the MAC," Mack said. "I feel like Ive got to go out there and dominate on the next level."

.J. -- Law enforcement agents in New Jersey have redoubled efforts to fight what they worry could be one of the biggest menaces to come with next months Super Bowl: sex trafficking. Hundreds of thousands of visitors are expected to descend on New Jersey for the Feb. 2 football game. Many believe the states sprawling highway system, proximity to New York City and diverse population make it an attractive base of operations for traffickers. "New Jersey has a huge trafficking problem," said U.S. Rep. Chris Smith, R-N.J., who is co-chairman of the House anti-human trafficking caucus. "One Super Bowl after another after another has shown itself to be one of the largest events in the world where the cruelty of human trafficking goes on for several weeks." Law enforcement in New Jersey has worked for years to battle forced prostitution. The state strengthened its human trafficking law in early 2013, but it hit a roadblock in August when a federal judge ruled that a portion of the law that pertains to commercial sex ads posted online may conflict with federal legislation. The state is appealing. There are scant statistics and much debate over how much sex trafficking increases during a Super Bowl or other large sporting event, but its been enough of a concern to prompt New Jersey and previous Super Bowl host cities to pay attention to it. Danielle Douglas, a speaker and advocate who identifies herself as a sex-trafficking survivor, said any major sporting event attracts sex traffickers looking to make money. "The Super Bowl is a huge, huge arena for sex trafficking," Douglas said. Some visitors "are coming to the Super Bowl not even to watch football -- they are coming to the Super Bowl to have sex with women, and/or men or children." Soon after the announcement that the 2014 Super Bowl would be held at MetLife Stadium, New Jersey officials set up training for legions of law enforcement personnel, hospitality workers, high school students, airport employees and others on identifying the signs of sex trafficking. Local houses of worship are handing out fliers notifying congregants of warning signs, and truckers are being trained to look for people -- mostly women but also men -- who may be held against their will. Sex trafficking, to be prosecuted as such, must involve -- unlike prostitution -- not only a buyer and seller of sex but also a pimp or trafficker controlling the transaction, according to the New Jersey attorney generals office. Officials are also warning the public to watch for people who are forced into labour and individual pimps exerting control over young women and men who are oftentimes underage. "Weve enlisted, basically, every service provider that people coming to the Super Bowl are going to run into," Acting Attorney General John J. Hoffman said. "There are a lot of eyes that are going to be on their activities and going to be on spotting potential victims of this crime." The Super Bowl task force convened by Hoffmans office is composed of state, local and federal law enforcement officers, community groups, social workers and others. Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli said ads are starting to pop up on Internet sites and law enforcement officials are gleaning information from them. "When youre about ready to have 400,000 men come to this area of the country," Molinelli said, "youre invariably going to have more people try to take advantage of that by providing prostitutes and prostitution." The National Football League said it shares law enforcement concerns and supports strong anti-human trafficking laws. The NFLs security department hosted a meeting in September with law enforcement officials who combat human trafficking and child prostitution. "We work closely with federal, state and local law enforcement to ensure that the Super Bowl is a safe environment for the host community and the fans who enjoy the game and the celebration," NFL Spokesman Brian McCarthy said in a statement. Similar concerns had been expressed before the 2013 Super Bowl in New Orleans, McCarthy noted, but the NFL was "pleased to learn that the grave concerns about human trafficking and prostitution were not realized," thanks to law enforcement. Officials in Texas, Louisiana and Indiana strengthened efforts to combat sex trafficking ahead of previous Super Bowls. In Arizona, which will host the 2015 Super Bowl, U.S. Sen. John McCains wife, Cindy, has been speaking out, calling the Super Bowl the "largest human-trafficking venue on the planet." It is difficult to ascertain the exact number of trafficking cases in a given year or place because so much of it goes unreported. In 2012, the Polaris Project, a non-profit that works to combat human trafficking, received 20,652 calls reporting trafficking to its hotline, 330 of which were from New Jersey, CEO Bradley Myles said. "The overall size of the phenomenon in the United States is much more significant than statistics show," Myles said. Polaris plans to add additional staffers to the hotline in February, but the organization has seen only a modest uptick in calls during previous Super Bowls, Myles said. In December, Kathleen Friess led a two-hour presentation in Hamilton Township for hotel and nightclub employees and tried to dispel notions of what human trafficking looks like. Often, Friess said, its a local woman forced into sex work by a man she initially thought had romantic intentions. Other times, its a woman from another country whose family is threatened. Friess told the employees to look for women who may not be in control, who look frightened and may exhibit signs of physical abuse. Victims are often runaways, the impoverished, abuse victims or those living in the country illegally, she said. "You guys are at that front line, seeing them coming and going," Friess said. "Youre in a position to prevent human trafficking." Ronald Moore, the security manager at the Grand Summit Hotel in Summit, said he plans to replicate the presentation for his staff. A former police officer, Moore said the hotel has been preparing for the possibility of crime during Super Bowl week. "Youre going to have the potential for everything from stolen goods to assault to check fraud. Everything you can imagine is going to be happening," he said. "You have to be aware." Jane Wells, a filmmaker who recently released "Tricked," a documentary about human trafficking, said she wants law enforcement to focus on the crime all the time, not just around sporting events. "This is a 365-day-a-year problem," Wells said.

.Hoffenheim forward Anthony Modeste opened the scoring on a counterattack in the 15th minute, shooting though Jaroslav Drobnys legs after Lewis Holtby lost the ball in midfield.MONTREAL -- Troy Smith is looking like he will grow into the job as the Montreal Alouettes starting quarterback after all. After the offence was stifled in a season opening loss last week in Calgary, Smith and the entire Alouettes team were a notch better in a 24-9 victory over the struggling B.C. Lions on Friday night. Montreal (1-1) posted the first win by an East Division team over a western club this season and dropped the Lions to 0-2. "There wasnt a lot of difference in play calls, it was just the quarterback making different reads and doing different things," said Smith. "Obviously, having a little more time with the co-ordinator and the offensive line coach is going to help you. "Im kind of greedy in the sense that I like throwing touchdown passes and I didnt get one, so Im still chomping at the bit to get my first one of the season, but if we keep getting wins, thats the most important statistic." Running back Brandon Whitaker and linebacker Chip Cox scored first quarter touchdowns and Sean Whyte kicked three field goals and a single for the Alouettes. The defence made the real difference, sacking B.C. starter Kevin Glenn five times, picking off two passes and recovering a fumble. Smith was sacked only once and was not picked off. Smith completed 17 passes for a relatively modest 187 yards, but he helped the Alouettes pick up 203 yards on the ground with a few timely rushing first downs. The Lions produced only one Paul McCallum field goal with Glenn at quarterback. Backup John Beck had an eight-yard TD toss to Courtney Taylor with 1:20 left in the game on a drive aided by three Montreal penalties. It was their first TD since they got two in the first quarter of a loss last week at home to Edmonton. "This is a tough business to be in because you can be so high one day and so low the next," said the 35-year-old Glenn, who became the starter when Travis Lulay was placed on the six-game injured list with a shoulder injury. "Weve just got to make sure we stick together and try to turn this thing around. "Its a long season. The most important thing is to stick together as a team." The concern for B.C. going into the game was having newcomer Ryan Cave starting at left tackle after only two practices with the team this week. It wasnt all his doing, but Montreal spent much of the first half in the Lions backfield, either sacking Glenn or hurrying throws. Bowman said the defence didnt key on Cave.

. "The way (defensive co-ordinator Noel Thorpe) called the game, it wasnt anything against Cave," said Bowman, whose four sacks was one short of a team record. "I actually thought he played OK. "Coach Thorpe called a masterful game. We didnt take advantage of one player, but their scheme in general." The defence came up with the first score 7:36 into the game on a play that had the crowd of 20,018 on its feet. Defensive lineman Scott Paxson reached up a hand to pick off Glenns throw, then flipped the ball to Cox to run 20 yards into the end zone. It was a fifth career TD for Cox. "I had contain on that play," said Paxson. "The quarterback threw the ball a little low and I got my hands on it. After that, I wasnt really thinking. I saw I was about to be tackled so I pitched it to Chip." Cox had one defensive tackle, leaving the 2013 outstanding defensive player two short of moving into the top-10 in CFL history. Smith led a nine-play, 71-yard drive capped by Whitakers 32-yard TD run at 13:27. Whyte added a pair of field goals in the second quarter, one of them set up by an Andrew Harris fumble that was recovered by Jerald Brown on the B.C. 43 yard line. The other came after Smiths 37-yard pass to S.J. Green, which appeared to hit the ground. However, B.C. coach Mike Benevides said spotters got the replay late and the referee ruled that the next play had started before the challenge flag was thrown. "That would have been a difference of three points," Benevides said. "Id love to get the replay on time." Montreal back-up quarterback Tanner Marsh fumbled on a third-and-short play into Solomon Elimimians hands at the Montreal 40 to set up McCallums 24-yard field goal to put B.C. on the board 5:41 into the second half. Glenn had a promising drive die when he was intercepted by Marc-Olivier Bouillette in the end zone early in the fourth quarter. Glenn threw only seven picks all of last season with Calgary, but has six in two games with the Lions. B.C. finally scored with Beck in the game. "I wanted Beck to get some work,"said Benevides. "He had some time to warm up, so I got him in there to get some game reps." The schedule doesnt get easier for the Lions, whose next game is at Saskatchewan on July 12. The Alouettes stay home to face 2-0 Winnipeg next Friday.

PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas -- Winning ugly is nothing that Kansas coach Bill Self will complain about. In fact, theres times he finds it downright satisfying. Like Thursday, for instance, when Canadian Andrew Wiggins was slowed by the flu, when the second-ranked Jayhawks used reserves more than starters in the second half and when the hottest scorer on the court happened to be wearing a Wake Forest uniform. No problem -- Self was all smiles afterward, because above all else, a win always beats the alternative. Wiggins scored 12 of his 17 points in the final 5:53, and Kansas held off previously unbeaten Wake Forest 87-78 in the quarterfinals of the Battle 4 Atlantis. A pair of reserves, Frank Mason and Joel Embiid, combined for 23 more points for the Jayhawks (5-0), who will face Villanova in the semifinals on Friday night. "Ive always taken great pride in winning ugly," Self said. "I think its good to win ugly. Id rather win pretty, but theres nothing wrong with winning ugly. The thing about it thats frustrating to me, and I think these guys will probably agree, weve always been a team that won ugly by not allowing the other team to score." That wasnt the case Thursday, at least not in the final 20 minutes. Well, the last 20:01, really. Kansas was up by 16 when Codi Miller-McIntyre got a layup to fall for Wake Forest just before the first half ended. Before that shot, Miller-McIntyre had only four points. He finished with a career-best 26, and has scored at least 20 in five of Wake Forests six games this season. "Ive been coaching for a long time and hes one of the best Ive ever been around," Wake Forest coach Jeff Bzdelik said. "Great, great person. Youre seeing the fruits of his labour. ... Ive never seen a young man put the amount of time into his game as he has, both on the court, in the weight room and cerebral. He watches as much film as us as coaches." Miller-McIntyre was seated to Bzdeliks right as he raved about his effort. As his coach spoke, Miller-McIntyres facial expression barely changed. The Demon Deacons let a chance slip away, and Miller-McIntyre wasnt thrilled about that realization. "I hate the term moral victory," he said. The Demon Deacons (5-1) held Kansas to a season-low 47 per cent from the field, but lost forward Devin Thomas after he was ejected for two technical fouls with 7:28 remaining. Bzdelik said he was not given an explanation. And when told that Kansas was getting four free throws, even Self scoffed. "I hated what happened with Thomas," Self said. Tyler Cavanaugh scored 11 points, while Madison Jones and Coron Williams each had 10 for Wake Forest. When Thomas got ejected, Kansas Conner Frankamp made three of the four free throws to put the Jayhawks up 64-52. And when Wiggins, who was largely silent offensively for the first 35 minutes, made a 3-pointer for a 68-57 lead, the overwhelmingly pro-KU crowd might have sensed that Wakes upset bid had run dry. The Demon Deacons had other ideas. Miller-McIntyre kept attacking, and his 3-pointer with just under 2 minutes left got Wake Forest to 77-72. Desperately needing a stop, Wake Forest wound up losing Arnaud Adala Moto to his fifth foul when he got in Wiggins way on a drive with 38 seconds left. Wiggins made the first free throw and missed the second, but the ball bounced out of bounds to Kansas. Naadir Tharpe hit a pair of foul shots to make it a three-possession game, and Kansas escaped. "Were happy we won," Self said. "I thought Wake Forest really outplayed us in the second half." A three-games-in-three-days tournament is a chance for teams to show off their depth. Kansas wasted no time in doing just that. The Jayhawks had eight players score in the first 10 minutes, running out to a quick 24-13 lead. A 17-2 run put Kansas in early control, with the Demon Deacons getting only one field goal in a stretch that lasted nearly 8 minutes. Kansas had seven players score in that burst, no one getting more than four points and Wiggins not even registering a field goal. Wake Forest weathered that storm, and the score was 27-20 with 5:25 left until the break. Thats when the Jayhawks hit the gas again, scoring 13 of the next 17 points before winding up with a 40-26 edge at halftime. Miller-McIntyre got a layup to fall just before the halftime buzzer, and then the Demon Deacons opened the second half on a 16-6 run. But the Jayhawks never lost the lead in the second half, even with reserves in there for long stretches. "Our bench was really good," Self said.

. A lawmaker is hoping the buzz from California Chromes run for the Triple Crown might build support for a bill that would place the U.(SportsNetwork.com) - The New England Patriots have a pretty important game to prepare for in just over a weeks time so Bill Belichick took to the podium on Saturday for a surprise press conference designed to move things along from DeflateGate, the NFLs sting operation designed to see if the Pats intentionally deflated footballs in the AFC Championship Game. Communication isnt Belichicks forte but he put on his professors hat in an effort to explain a process he claimed to know little about until this scandal enveloped the national news cycle. It was a weird exercise in which Belichick even referenced Marisa Tomeis character from the film My Cousin Vinny, Mona Lisa Vito. Im not a scientist. Im not an expert in footballs. Im not an expert in football measurements, Belichick said. Im just telling you what I know. I would not say Im Mona Lisa Vito of the football world, as she was in the car- expertise area. But, while making sure to inform us all that hes not a scientist, the embattled Belichick nonetheless broke into a Bill Nye impression trying to cloud the issue with pedantic minutia, explaining the process New England goes through to prepare footballs for a game while also droning on about how the PSI could change in a football due to atmospheric conditions. Its similar to the concept of when you get into your car and the light comes on and it says low tire pressure, because the car has been sitting in the driveway outside overnight, Belichick claimed, and you staart it up and start driving it, and the light goes off -- its a similar concept to that.dddddddddddd. Except that doesnt explain why the Colts footballs were fine and only the Pats were underinflated. Perhaps Tomei could have been used to explain Indianapolis footballs were the equivalent of a Pontiac Tempest and New Englands were Buick Skylarks -- similar but different. Heck, Belichick even tried to say all footballs are different, you know like snowflakes or DNA. The only real substance of what was a meaningless exercise designed to cloud the issue further by confusing those who want answers was Belichicks continued insistence that he and his team did nothing wrong. At no time was there any intent -- whatsoever -- to try and compromise the integrity of the game, Belichick said. I believe now, 100 percent, that I have personally and (the Patriots) have absolutely followed every rule to the letter. Which got me to thinking. Belichick is a lot like another big Tomei fan -- Seinfelds George Costanza, who once tried to teach his buddy Jerry how to lie. If you believe it, George said, its not a lie. And Belichick believes all of it so its on to Seattle ... finally. Im embarrassed to talk about the amount of time that Ive put into this relative to the other important challenge in front of us, the coach said. We have a huge game, a huge challenge for our football team that is where that focus is going to go. Ive spent more than enough time on this.

RENTON, Wash. - When Michael Bennett decided to sign with Seattle during the 2013 off-season, part of the attraction was the idea that hed no longer be asked to play nearly every down and wouldnt be worn out by the end of the season.Last season, thats almost exactly how it played out for Bennett and the rest of Seattles defensive line. This season, not so much.Bennett, Cliff Avril and the rest of Seattles front four have seen their snap counts increase significantly this season and especially in the past three weeks. The rotation Seattle used with such effectiveness in its run to the Super Bowl has been reduced.Thats just how it is, Bennett said. It doesnt bother me. Im just moving around a lot and trying to make as many plays as I can. I was telling somebody the other day, on this team, statistically you will never be at the top of any position like you want. You wont have the most interceptions, you wont have the most tackles, and youll just be on a really good defence that will play for each other. I think thats what is so special about this team.Seattle is on a run of defensive success that has been rare in the NFL in recent seasons. The Seahawks have allowed just 507 total yards in the past three games, fourth-fewest since 2006. But with those lockdown performances against Arizona, San Francisco and Philadelphia has come an increased workload for Bennett, Avril and others.Bennett played 98 per cent of the defensive snaps against Arizona, 81 per cent against San Francisco and 93 per cent against the Eagles. Bruce Irvin played every snap against both Arizona and San Francisco before playing 30 of 46 against the Eagles. Avril has played at least 75 per cent of the snaps in each of the last three games.Down the stretch were just playing the games. Whatever we need in the rotations were going with, Seattle coach Pete Carroll said. There is no pitch-count here with these guys. We have rotations in mind but we only had 46 plays last week so we were fortunate in that sense. Nobody was overplayed there.Last season, no Seattle defensive lineman played more than 60.6 per cent of his possible defensive snaps, according to STATS. Bennett was in on 57.4 per cent of the defensive plays. Avril was in for 56 per cent of the snaps. So why the dramatic increase this season?Much of it is related to Seattles depth. Chris Clemons, who led Seattles defensive linemen in percentage of snaps last season, is now in Jacksonville. So is defensive end Red Bryant, while pass rush defensive tackle Clinton McDonald went to Tampa Bay.The other factor is injuries. Seattle had high hopes for what rookie Cassius Marsh and third-year defensive lineman Greg Scruggs could add to the rotation up front, only to see both end up on injured reserve. Brandon Mebanes torn hamstring that ended his season also created more disruption on the line. Each week it depends a little bit, Seattle defensive co-ordinator Dan Quinn said. I think we know sometimes were at our best when were able to get more guys but if we have to play Mike and Cliff more for us to do that, theyre prepared to do that as well.NOTES: C Max Unger (ankle/knee) was limited in practice Friday and is likely still a week away. He is doubtful for Sunday. ... TE Cooper Helfet (ankle) is questionable after missing the last two games.

. The Swede became the first golfer to win the PGA Tours FedEx Cup and European Tours Race to Dubai in the same season. "It is still taking a little time to sink in what Ive achieved this week as was the case when I won the FedEx Cup but then it just kept getting better and better as the days went on and I am sure this will be the same," he said.EUGENE, Ore. -- The Oregon Ducks opened the regular season with a 13-game winning streak. They closed it with seven straight victories. The Ducks may have stumbled in the middle, but reserve guard Jason Calliste says the Ducks still belong in the national conversation -- especially after a 64-57 victory over No. 3 Arizona in the regular-season finale Saturday. "We can be one of the best teams in the country," he said. "Doesnt matter who were playing. Doesnt matter what the name on the chest says." Calliste made the go-ahead jumper and free throw with 4:22 left and finished with 18 points for the Ducks, who trailed by as many as 12 points. "I just didnt want to lose," he said. "Wasnt time to go home yet." Johnathan Loyd added 16 points for the Ducks (22-8, 10-8 Pac-10) who greatly improved their chances of a bid in the NCAA tournament. Last season Oregon won the Pac-12 tournament and advanced all the way to the final 16. Aaron Gordon had 21 points for the Wildcats (28-3, 15-3), who had already clinched the Pac-12 regular-season title heading into next weeks conference tournament in Las Vegas. The Ducks won 13 straight to start the season and were ranked as high as No. 10, but then they lost five straight to tumble out of the poll and fall in the Pac-12 standings. The Ducks considered the game a must-win after a six-game winning streak made them a possible bubble team for the NCAA post-season and gave them their fourth straight season with at least 20 victories. As for the prospects following the victory over Arizona, Oregon coach Dana Altman wasnt going to speculate. "Im not going to worry about all that," he said. "Weve got to go to the conference tournament and weve just got to play." The Wildcats led by as many as 12 points in the first half, but Oregon closed to 31-29 at halftime. Mike Mosers 3-pointer got the Ducks to 36-34 early in the second half with a 3-pointer. A six-point run put Arizona ahead 44-36 with 11:55 left and the Wildcats held on to the lead until Joseph Youngs 3-pointer got the Ducks within 50-48 and Loyds layup tied it at 50 with five minutes left.dddddddddddd Calliste hit a jumper and a free throw to give the Ducks a 53-51 lead with 4:22 left for their first lead since the games opening minute. Calliste and Loyd hit back-to-back 3s to stretch the lead to 59-51 and the 12,364 fans at Matthew Knight Arena were on their feet. The Ducks held on for the win and the crowd rushed the court. Arizona had won five straight since a 69-66 overtime loss to rival Arizona State on Feb. 14. "They were highly motivated," Arizona coach Sean Miller said about the Ducks. "With that, we had to play at our best and we didnt." Oregon went into the game averaging a league-best 82.9 points, while the Wildcats were holding opponents to a league-low 58.5 points. Arizona jumped out to a 9-2 lead that was snapped by Loyds steal and fast-break layup for the Ducks. The Wildcats made it 20-8 on Nick Johnsons dunk midway through the first half. Joseph Youngs layup pulled Oregon within 24-18, but Caleb Tarczewski answered with a dunk for the Wildcats. Oregon pulled to 31-29 at the half on Callistes 3-pointer with 3-seconds to go before the break. Calliste made four of five 3-point attempts in the game. Tarczewski led all players with 10 points in the first half. "Theyre fighting for a tournament berth and guys are in zones," said Johnson, who finished with 11 points for the Wildcats. "Give him (Calliste) credit, he made the shots." Mike Moser had with 10 points and 10 rebounds for his fourth straight double-double. Arizona beat Oregon 67-65 in Tucson on Feb. 6. It was Arizonas first full game without sophomore forward Brandon Ashley, who is out for the season after surgery on his right foot. Seven Oregon seniors played their final regular-season home game at Matthew Knight Arena.

MessaggioInviato: Lun Mag 20, 2019 3:11 am    Oggetto:  enough for the right-hander to be on the All-Star
Descrizione:
Rispondi citando

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Rick Porcello has an AL-leading 12 wins and a 3.39 ERA for the first-place Detroit Tigers. His manager believes thats good enough for the right-hander to be on the All-Star team. However, Porcello, who has a family fishing trip planned for the All-Star break, hasnt been picked for the team yet. "I think he clearly is an All-Star," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said after Porcello pitched seven strong innings in Detroits 5-1 victory over Kansas City on Saturday. "Hes got 12 wins, An ERA in the low 3s. Theres going to be snubs every year at the All-Star break and I think hes clearly a snub." Porcello (12-5) outpitched James Shields as the Tigers won their fifth in a row. He also raised his career record against Kansas City to 8-3 while yielding six hits and one run to help give Detroit a 7 1/2-game cushion over Kansas City in the AL Central. Alex Avila drove in three runs, putting the Tigers in position to go for a four-game sweep on Sunday. Porcello, who has won four of his last five decisions and been key in Detroits taking a big lead in the division, is fine whether or not hes selected for the All-Star game. "Thats not my decision," he said. "I just go out there and pitch and let everybody else take care of that." His teammates clearly believe Porcello deserves to be there when the games elite are introduced. "We all thought he definitely deserved (a selection), but I will say that is a tough group he was in, that final vote," said Avila, who drove in three runs with a single and a ninth-inning homer. "All those guys did deserve it, too. Theres always going to be a guy who gets left out." The Royals have lost six of their last eight and are 0-6 at home against Detroit this year. "To this point, weve underachieved but were still seven games better than we were at this point last year," Kansas City manager Ned Yost said. "We know were a second-half club. Weve been a second-half club." Shields (9-5) allowed two runs and seven hits in seven innings. He struck out eight and walked none while throwing 121 pitches. The Tigers scored three in the ninth against reliever Aaron Crow, starting with J.D. Martinezs leadoff home run. Nick Castellanos was safe at first after a replay review overturned a call, and Avila hit a 427-foot homer. Ian Kinslers RBI single put the Tigers on top 1-0 in the third. In the fourth, Torii Hunter hit a drive into straightaway centre field over the head of Jarrod Dyson and turned it into his first triple of the season. The relay throw actually beat the sliding Hunter to the bag, but he was safe when third baseman Mike Moustakas failed to get the tag down. Avilas RBI single made it 2-0. Billy Butler had a sacrifice fly in the sixth after the Royals had wasted several scoring chances. Alcides Escobar bounced into an inning-ending double play in the second, Lorenzo Cain did the same in the third and then, with the bases loaded and two out in the fifth, Porcello struck out Cain on a 2-2 pitch. Al Alburquerque pitched a perfect ninth for the Tigers, who held the Royals to one run for the second night in a row. NOTES: Austin Jackson has led off the Tigers first inning with a base hit in all three games of the series. ... Cain made a terrific catch of Miguel Cabreras opposite-field drive in the first, snaring the ball just as he crashed hard into the wall. ... Both starters laboured, but after four innings, Shields had thrown 78 pitches and Porcello 40. ... It was the 12th time in his career that Shields has thrown 121 or more pitches. ... Eric Hosmers first-inning single stretched his hitting streak to a career-best 12 games for the Royals.

MONTREAL - After two years out of the NHL playoffs, there is new optimism among the Nashville Predators.A stunning turnaround aided by a coaching change, the addition of veteran forwards James Neal and Mike Ribeiro and the emergence of 20-year-old forward Filip Forsberg have put Nashville in first place in the Central Division going into the all-star break. Now they believe theyve got enough pieces to keep up their strong play through the second half of the regular season and do some damage in the playoffs.Absolutely, veteran centre Mike Fisher said Tuesday. We really believe in this group. We believe were a top team in this league and we are. Weve shown it thus far. Were really confident in the group we have, that we can win any night against other top teams. The Predators had not lost twice in a row this season going into a game Tuesday night against the Canadiens in Montreal, where they were without star goalie Pekka Rinne for a third game due to an injury expected to last three weeks.Backed by Rinne and an impressive defence group led by Shea Weber, the Predators are the NHLs stingiest team, allowing only 2.25 goals per game. But Nashville has been known as a tight defensive side in recent years. The surprise is that they are tied for fifth in goals scored per game at 3.0.Part of that stems from the decision last summer to let the conservative Barry Trotz go after coaching the team through its first 15 NHL campaigns and bring in a more attack-minded Peter Laviolette.Trotz is now performing wonders in making the Washington Capitals a winning, two-way club, while Laviolette will also be a coach of the year candidate for doing much the same in Nashville. Its good for both sides, said Weber. You see the success theyre having (in Washington) and that were having. There was a different feel coming into training camp this year with a new face and I think the guys have responded very well. The second part of the season will determine if the Predators are for real, but it looks like it so far. They certainly have the goaltending with Rinne, considered one of the best in the world. With Weber, they have the big No. 1 blue-liner every team wishes it had, and he is backed by a group that can defend and move the puck. Among them is emerging talent Seth Jones, the fourth pick in the 2013 draft.Only a few months ago, they didnt appear to have much up front, but then Forsberg turned into a nearly point-per-game player and a strong two-way player on the top line with veteran Mike Ribeiro, who so far has shown a new commitment to discipline after being bought out by Arizona due to behavioural problems.Hes been an excellent addition to our team, Laviolette said of Ribeiro, who is on pace for his first 70-point campaign since 2010-11. Terrific in the room, terrific teammate, terrific on-ice play.Forsberg, playing his first full NHL campaign, was acquired from Washington in March 2013 for Martin Erat and Michael Latta in what is looking to be a spectacular steal for Nashville.Fisher centres James Neal, a one-time 40-goal scorer picked up in a trade with Pittsburgh in June, and Colin Wilson, who is having a breakout season and will soon top his career high of 35 points.Veteran Olli Jokinen, signed from Winnipeg, is playing on the fourth line. Another reclamation project, defenceman Anton Volchenkov, brings his stay at home style to the third defence pair and being dumped by New Jersey.Fisher likes the teams chances. With the goaltending we have, and look at our back end: everyone can handle the puck and skate, he said. And you look at the mix, the young guys, the leadership, energy, the way we play. Were all excited about what we can do. Its a tough league and the playoffs are tough, but we feel weve got a lot of pieces and character and we can be successful. The Predators have won only two playoff series in their history, the last against Detroit in 2012.The optimism now stems from adding some offence to a team known for tight defence. That comes from Laviolette.Id say were more aggressive, said Fisher. We want to be hungry for pucks, to forecheck really hard. The way our defence can move the puck helps us offensively. And defensively, we want to be hard to play against. He wants us to play both ends. He wants us to make plays and be creative, but be responsible. It has worked so far, but Weber, the captain, knows there is a lot of hockey still be played.I was on this team a while back when we were in first place for a while too, he said. Weve had good teams since Ive been in Nashville. Its just been tough the last couple of years. Theres still a lot of season left and we have to keep it up.

. Then youve got to worry about the other up and coming teams in the two weaker divisions in the "Junior Circuit".ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Roenis Elias came through with another positive start to follow up his first complete game. Elias won his second consecutive start, Dustin Ackley drove in three runs, and the Seattle Mariners beat the Tampa Bay Rays 7-4 on Saturday. Elias (5-4), coming off a three-hit shutout over Detroit last Sunday, was chased after giving up a two-run homer in the eighth to Evan Longoria that cut the Mariners lead to 7-4. The left-hander allowed four runs and five hits over 7 2-3 innings. "I felt really good out there," Elias said through an interpreter. "Im doing what Im capable of doing. Im working hard to keep that going." Elias struck out five and walked two. "I really liked what I saw today," Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said. "Probably left him in a little bit too long." Ackley hit a three-run double off Alex Cobb (1-4) during a four-run fifth that put the Mariners ahead 7-2. Willie Bloomquist added an RBI double in the inning. "Thats huge," Ackley said of getting Elias the five-run lead. "At point hes throwing the ball well anyway. To have that kind of insurance definitely helps him." Fernando Rodney, the former Rays closer, pitched the ninth to get his 17th save in his first appearance at Tropicana Field since joining the Mariners as a free agent in February. James Loney homered for the Rays, who had a stopped a 10-game losing streak by beating Seattle 4-0 Friday night. The Rays celebrated the life of senior adviser Don Zimmer before the game. Zimmer died Wednesday night at 83. Joe Torre, Jim Leyland and Tommy Lasorda, along with more than 20 family members were present. "It was very emootional," said McClendon, who played for Zimmer on the 1989 NL East champion Chicago Cubs.dddddddddddd"I thought it was very on." Bloomquist had an RBI single and Endy Chavez hit a sacrifice fly during the fourth. Cole Gillespie hit his first homer of the season, a solo shot in the second. It was Gillespies first homer since Sept. 28, 2011, while with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Seattle has won five of six. Cobb gave up seven runs and 10 hits in 4 1-3 innings. The right-hander is 0-3 in four starts since returning from a strained left oblique. "They had some really good at bats working and they just beat us up," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "Just not Cobbs day." Loney had a solo shot and Ali Solis drove in a run with a sacrifce bunt as the Rays went ahead 2-1 in the second. NOTES: Ackley had two RBIs in his previous 16 games. ... Seattle 1B Justin Smoak (sore left leg) and OF Michael Saunders (sore right shoulder) were both out of the lineup. Smoak entered as a defensive replacement in the ninth. ... The Rays designated reliever Josh Lueke for assignment and recalled RHP Kirby Yates from Triple-A Durham. Yates entered in the seventh and threw 1 1-3 shutout innings in his big league debut. ... Seattle 2B Robinson Cano singled in the fifth and has a 16-game road hitting streak. ... Rays RHP Jeremy Hellckson (elbow) and C Ryan Hanigan (hamstring) started minor league rehab assignments with Single-A Charlotte. Hellickson gave up two hits in three shutout innings and Hanigan hit a two-run homer against Tampa. ... Seattle RHP Felix Hernandez (8-1) and Tampa Bay RHP Chris Archer (3-3) are Sundays scheduled starters.
